Meet the newest kid on the block — Threads ,
A groundbreaking app that launched last Thursday, has quickly captivated the attention of users worldwide with ten million people signed up in just seven hours after is launch.
What is Threads? How does it work?
Threads is built by the Instagram team, for sharing text updates and joining public conversations.
Threads allows you to sign up using your Instagram account and posts can be up to 500 characters long and include photos, gifs, links and videos up to 5 minutes in length.
It does look similar to Twitter with short text-based pieces of content, likes and reposts and you can quote a thread similar to quote tweeting.
Why Threads?
The speculation is that Meta may have long desired to introduce a platform to compete with Twitter. However, with Elon Musk's announcement regarding upcoming viewing limits on Twitter, which would restrict activity for unverified and newly opened accounts, it created a significant impact. This may have prompted Meta to take advantage of the situation. Consequently, they might have chosen to delay the release of Threads and opt for attracting users who are actively seeking alternatives to Twitter.
Does it have longevity?
With Threads less than a week old now and despite being initially iOS-only and not available in Europe, the App has already reached 70 million sign-ups (and counting). It’s becoming quite clear that Threads has the social network velocity to go all the way.
Here’s 5 reasons why:
1. The power of Meta : With the decline of Twitter under Elon Musk's leadership, various alternatives like Mastodon, Discord, Post, Cohost, and Bluesky have emerged. While many experienced a surge in activity it shortly was followed by a steep decline, however Meta possesses immediate credibility. It runs 4 billion + user platforms across Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, giving Meta a proven track record in scaling and building successful platforms.
2. Users have followers from the get-go : The challenge faced by new social apps or platforms is the "cold start" problem, where users join but find themselves alone without friends or content in their feed. Meta addressed this by basing Threads on the established platform of Instagram. This means that on day one, users have friends, contacts, and content. From the outset, Threads offers a vibrant social group, provided the user already had a network on Instagram.
3. The magic of a default Algorithmic Feed : Threads, like Twitter, utilises an algorithmic feed, which often proves more engaging than the traditional Following feed. This ensures strong content from the start, even if users didn't import their entire Instagram network. While some sophisticated users may dislike it, Meta has learned this from Facebook and Instagram that it generates instant interest, as TikTok taught us.
4. A new untapped audience craving social news : With approximately 300 million users on Twitter, there is still a vast untapped market of billions who have not embraced the platform. Threads has the potential to entice this audience with its text-heavy, simple, and news/event-focused social platform, offering a fresh alternative.
5.Simple interface: Threads evokes the simplicity of Twitter from its early days, with a straightforward approach. Despite lacking certain features, the absence of those features becomes one of its defining characteristics. This shift refocuses attention on people, their thoughts, and their ideas, as the platform intended.
When a more matured interface is fully live and working, and an expansion to Europe occurs, the growth opportunity is limitless.
Does Threads have Ads? Will Thread Advertising be a thing of the future?
Meta has indicated it will not monetise Threads this year, but left open the door for ads in the future.
Considering Instagram itself relies heavily on advertising for revenue generation, it is plausible that advertising will be introduced to Threads — so watch this space!
There’s been reports that Meta reps are in close conversation with large agencies and brands about how Threads will fit into their social strategies.
To join or not to join?
As Threads is part of Instagram, it's easy to set up an account from your Instagram page and import the bio and links. So brand protection is less of an issue than with other social networks.
In order to capitalise in the initial interest and transfer some of your followers over we would recommend creating a profile and importing your info over from Instagram, so whatever is in your current Instagram profile automatically migrates to Threads.
Ok, so we’re on Threads — now what?
You don't need to worry about developing a Threads strategy just yet.
In these early stages, the primary focus should be on educating and entertaining your audience. Everyone is still figuring things out (Meta included), and there's a sense of excitement (and reassurance) in the midst of this initial chaos.
Like with any new feature or product release, there is a natural learning curve involved. Embracing something new takes time and shouldn't be rushed, especially if you're a small business owner.
For now, enjoy the process and experiment with different types of content and be sure to keep an eye out for how the platform adapts in the coming days, weeks and months.
